Role Summary

As a Separations Chemist at Astral, you will play a pivotal role in the development and optimisation of chemical separation processes for the production and purification of radionuclide enabled by Astral’s fusion-based neutron source technology.  You will design, execute, and refine methods for isolating specific radionuclides from target mixtures, supporting both research and medical applications. Your expertise will directly contribute to the accessibility and affordability of cancer diagnostics and treatments in the UK and worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, optimise, and validate chemical separation and purification methods for a range of radioisotopes.

Conduct laboratory experiments involving radioactive materials, including the preparation, handling, and processing of samples.

Operate and maintain specialised equipment such as ion exchange columns, extraction chromatography systems, and analytical instruments (e.g., spectrometers, chromatographs).

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate separation processes into fusion-based radioisotope production workflows.

Analyse experimental data, troubleshoot processes, and document findings in technical reports and scientific publications.

Ensure compliance with all relevant safety protocols and regulatory requirements (e.g., IRR-17) for the handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials.

Monitor and manage laboratory inventory, including procurement of chemicals and consumables.

Train and mentor junior staff and technicians in separation techniques and laboratory best practices.

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance process efficiency, safety, and quality.

Present research findings at internal meetings, conferences, or to external partners as required.

Travel to scientific meetings, conferences, or collaboration partners as needed.

 

Qualifications & Skills

MSc or higher qualification in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.

Proficiency in the use of analytical and preparative separation equipment and techniques.

Demonstrated experience in radiochemical separations, purification techniques, or related laboratory research.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and a commitment to safety.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Willingness to undertake manual handling and safety training.
